An impressive 54 Australians have won a grand slam singles tournament.

However, only three players have achieved the feat since 2000 – Lleyton Hewitt, Samantha Stosur and Ash Barty.

Who will be the next Aussie tennis talent to secure a major?

The Sporting News looks at the most likely contenders.

Who will be the next Aussie to win a grand slam singles title?

Maya Joint

Joint appears to be the real deal.

The 19-year-old only turned pro in December, but has already won two WTA titles – one on clay and the other on grass.

Having already surged into the top 50, the sky appears to be the limit for the Michigan-born talent.

Joint's versatility across surfaces and emotional stability on court will make her a formidable opponent for years to come.

Of course, it's early days, but there is every reason to believe she can become a top-10 player and challenge for slams in the coming years.

Alex de Minaur

As Australia's top-ranked player, there is plenty of pressure on de Minaur to deliver.

He enjoyed a career-best season in 2024, making the quarter-finals of three grand slam tournaments before featuring in the ATP Finals.

However, he has typically struggled against higher-ranked players.

Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz appear set to dominate men's tennis for quite some time, which will likely limit de Minaur's ceiling.

'The Demon' has a 0-10 head-to-head record against Sinner, while he is 0-4 against Alcaraz.

His best shot would be at hard-court slams, but opportunities could be limited given the current crop of talent.

Daria Kasatkina

The recently naturalised Kasatkina is a strong addition to the Aussie tennis fold.

She achieved a career-high rank of 8 in 2022 and has remained in the top 20 since.

Despite her consistency on tour, grand slams haven't exactly been her friend.

The Russian-born player has reached one semi-final and two quarter-finals at majors in her career, with her strongest results coming on clay.

At 28, Kasatkina still has time, but nerves could be a factor if she were to reach a maiden slam final.

Alexei Popyrin

Popyrin may not have the consistency of a player like de Minaur, but he can get hot at certain tournaments.

This was evident when he claimed a Masters 1000 title in Montreal last year, becoming the first Australian man to do so since Lleyton Hewitt 21 years prior.

He has a solid 12–16 record against top-10 players, and rarely backs down from a challenge.

If Popyrin can work his way up the rankings and secure a strong seeding for grand slam tournaments, he has the ability to go on a giant-killing spree.

Emerson Jones

Jones is one to keep an eye on.

The current junior world No. 1 reached two junior grand slam finals in 2024 and continues to test herself in professional tournaments.

She notably beat Wang Xinyu in the first round of this year's Adelaide International.

With a career-high WTA rank of 206, there is still plenty of work to be done, but the 17-year-old looks incredibly promising.
