Canadian Open: Alex de Minaur defeats Daniil Medvedev in US Open warning image

Alex de Minaur has upset No. 2 seed Daniil Medvedev at the ATP Toronto Masters in a timely boost ahead of the US Open.

The top-ranked Australian men's tennis player won the clash 7-6 (7) 7-5 and is now just one match away from a spot in the final.

It marks de Minaur's best-ever run at the Masters 1000 level.

Alex de Minaur stuns Daniil Medvedev in Canada

Medvedev's dominant seven-match winning streak in Toronto has come to an end, with the former World No. 1 defeated by de Minaur in the quarterfinals of the Canadian Open.

Whilst the straight-sets win may appear simple on paper, it was far from an easy feat for the Australian.

Down 2-5 in the opening set, de Minaur saved three set points and managed to take it to a tiebreak, where he held his nerve to win 9-7.

He then used that momentum to secure the second set and pick up his sixth win over a top-10 opponent this year.

It was also the first time de Minaur has beaten two top-10 players at the same event this season, in promising signs ahead of the upcoming US Open.

"I had to play my best tennis. It's been a great week for me so far," de Minaur said post-match.

"Beating him last year gave me the confidence for this match.

"It's always a complete chess match between us, we're both adaptable and can play many styles of tennis. He brings out the best in me.

"The way I played today was the best style of tennis that I could produce."

Alex de Minaur next match: Potential route to Canadian Open final

De Minaur will now play in the first Masters 1000 semi-final of his career and has a genuine chance to claim his maiden title at that level.

World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz's shock defeat to Tommy Paul has notably left the draw wide open in Toronto.

The Australian's next opponent will be Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who is coming off a commanding straight-sets win over Mackenzie McDonald.

If de Minaur is able to defeat the Spaniard, he will face either Paul, Gael Monfils or Jannik Sinner in the final.
