Summer McIntosh has crushed Ariane Titmus' 400-metre freestyle world record in a major statement.

The teenage sensation recorded a time of 3:54.18 at the Canadian Swimming Trials on Sunday (AEST).

Her effort was 1.2 seconds faster than Titmus' previous best – a 3:55.38 at the World Championships in 2023.

McIntosh's performance also saw her become the first female to swim each lap of a 400m race in less than 30 seconds.

Despite already having three Olympic gold medals to her name, the 18-year-old Canadian is still in the early stages of her sporting career.

The Toronto-born talent was somewhat surprised by her world record.

"Going into tonight, I knew that my training has been really good these past few months," McIntosh said post-race.

"I am super, super happy with the swim. I did not think I would be that fast.

"The race did not feel like that. Touching the wall, I was really not expecting that time.

"That last 100, I'm always really, really hurting.

"I could tell by the crowd and the way they were cheering that I was probably close to the world record, so I really tried to push that last part for them."

The Australian Swimming Trials will start on Monday.

Titmus, however, won't look to snatch her record back just yet, as she enjoys a year-long break from the pool.
