Queensland Reds fullback Mason Gordon has announced his immediate retirement from rugby, citing ongoing concussion symptoms sustained during pre-season training.
The 22-year-old revealed his decision in a personal open letter released on Wednesday morning.
Gordon, who joined the Reds in October 2024 after making his Super Rugby debut with the now-defunct Melbourne Rebels, had been tipped for a promising career. But lingering effects from a head knock forced him to walk away from the game far sooner than expected.
“Not how, or when, I anticipated my career concluding”
“After sustaining a concussion during pre-season training from which I continue to have symptoms, and with the support of medical advice, I have made the difficult decision to retire from rugby on medical grounds,” Gordon wrote.
“This is not how, or when, I anticipated my career concluding after I signed a contract at the Queensland Reds in October 2024, the same year I made my Super Rugby debut for the Melbourne Rebels.”
A Sunshine Coast product, Gordon represented Australia at the Under-20 level and made four appearances for the Reds this year. He also featured in matches against Wales and Tonga in a bid to cement a spot for 2025.
“My short time at the Reds was enjoyable, and the strong culture of the Reds means I am excited to watch their future success as a supporter,” he added.
“I’m excited for the next chapter and want to thank all of the friends and family who have supported me on and off the field.”
