Former Rabbitohs forward receives mammoth ban for ‘unacceptable language’ image

Ex-South Sydney Rabbitohs forward Zane Musgrove has been hit with an eight-game suspension after pleading guilty to using “unacceptable language” during Warrington Wolves’ Challenge Cup semi-final win over Leigh Leopards in May.

Musgrove, who has since signed permanently with Championship side Oldham, did not take the field during the match in question, but the nature of his comments has drawn a stern response from the RFL tribunal.

A statement from the governing body confirmed the ban on Wednesday, citing language “related to disability” and outlining the findings of the independent Operational Rules Tribunal.

‘Expressed remorse’ but still sidelined for two months

“In his written ruling, Sean Smith – who chaired the independent Operational Rules Tribunal on Tuesday evening (June 24) – credited the player for apologising immediately after the incident, and for subsequently expressing remorse, and undertaking education,” the RFL said.

Musgrove’s final game for Warrington came weeks earlier, on May 4, before his move to Oldham. Since joining the Roughyeds, the 29-year-old has scored one try in three appearances as he attempts to reignite his career in England’s second tier.

The suspension will sideline him for the next two months, a significant blow to Oldham’s ambitions of pushing for a top-table finish.

A full written ruling on the case is expected to be published in the coming days.
