New South Wales produced a powerful statement in enemy territory to take the opening game of the three-match State of Origin series over Queensland.

The new-look Blues, who are being led by coach John Strange who took after he took over from Kylie Hilder, put on an impressive display at Suncorp Stadium as they eased to a 32-12 win.

The NSW mentor handed debuts to four players with three of them crossing the stripe during the victory in Game I.

However, it wasn't so rosy for the defending champions with the Maroons forced to head back to the drawing board as they prepare to head to Sydney to try and keep the series alive.

NSW Sky Blues team news

Strange named four debutants in his 20-player squad for Game I of the series.

Making their Origin debuts were Abbi Church (Parramatta Eels), Jayme Fressard (Sydney Roosters), Ellie Johnston (Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks), and Jocelyn Kelleher (Sydney Roosters).

Church showcased her quality at fullback while also notching a try during an utterly dominant second half for the Blues in the opener.

Fressard crossed for a double and Ellie Johnston barged her way over from close range to cap a strong display through the middle.

Jesse Southwell, who was recalled after missing last year's series, was stellar at halfback as she laid on a try and provided two linebreak assists.

Captain Isabelle Kelly also had a night out as the centre bagged a four-pointer and provided two try assists.

Prop Simaima Taufa was strong through the middle as she notched 134 run metres and 12 tackles.

Strange has named an unchanged side for Game II as a result of the standout displays across the board.

Olivia Kernick picked up a rib injury but managed to battle through and finish the contest. The forward has shrugged off the issue, although if she is eventually ruled out Shaylee Bent could receive a call-up after serving as the 18th player for the second time.

Tiana Penitani Gray was put on report for a hair pull on Tamika Upton but escaped without a charge.

QLD Maroons team news

The Maroons endured a tough night at Suncorp as they went down to a heavy defeat to their rivals but Tahnee Norris has made just one change to her 17 for Game II.

Desinty Brill has dropped out of the side with Chelsea Lenarduzzi brought into the side via the bench.

As a result of Brill's axing, Keilee Joseph will take over at lock while Makenzie Weale has been promoted off the pine to start up front.

The tweaks in the forward pack are designed to provide more power through the middle for the Maroons after star Tamika Upton was kept relatively quiet during the loss.

The fullback is sure to be looking for an improved performance in Sydney after she made just 77 run metres from 11 carries in Game I.

Jasmine Peters made her debut for her state but saw her night ended in disappointing fashion after she copped a head knock. The winger initially left the field for a HIA but it was later ruled to be a category-one incident.

Jada Ferguson, Rory Owen and Tavarna Papalii also made their debuts in Game I and have held onto their spots.

Papalii was promoted into the starting side after initially being named on the bench as she took the place of Brill at lock.

Romy Teiztzel has avoided a ban after Keeley Davis accused her of an eye-gouge. The NSW player refused to press ahead with the claim after the game.
