Selwyn Cobbo may have signed with the Dolphins for 2026, but Broncos coach Michael Maguire has made it crystal clear: the Queensland flyer is going nowhere this year.

The 23-year-old winger, currently plying his trade in reserve grade, inked a one-year deal with the Dolphins after the Broncos were unable to match rival offers due to salary cap constraints. While speculation swirled around a possible early release, Maguire has ruled it out firmly.

“Selly and I have spoken, and he wants to be here (for the rest of the year),” Maguire said (via Fox Sports AU). “He wants to win a comp at the Broncos... He’ll be at the Broncos for the rest of 2025.”

Salary cap squeeze ends Cobbo stay, but not just yet

Cobbo’s departure has stung the Broncos, with Maguire acknowledging the challenge of retaining stars under a tight salary cap. The club recently re-signed Kotoni Staggs and Josiah Karapani, while also adding Grant Anderson to its outside backs depth, squeezing Cobbo out of the top side for now.

“It’s a tough one because I really enjoyed coaching Selly. He’s a great man,” Maguire added. “But it’s part of the game, unfortunately, where not everyone can stay.”

Despite interest from other clubs, including the Dragons and Cowboys, Cobbo’s 2026 destination is locked in, and Dolphins CEO Terry Reader believes they’ve secured a future star.

“We believe he has untapped potential to go to even greater heights in our game,” Reader said.

But until next year, Cobbo’s focus is firmly on helping the Broncos push for a premiership.
