Daly Cherry-Evans axed: Maroons captain won't play Origin Game 2

Cherry-Evans has been axed for the second match of the series.

The decision all but ends the 36-year-old's Origin career, barring a surprise Game 3 return.

Tom Dearden will take over the pivotal No. 7 jersey.

The Cowboys star came off the bench in Game 1, with many calling for him to be promoted to the starting lineup.

Cherry-Evans was relatively quiet in the opener, running for 88 metres and kicking for 262 metres.

However, he was given relatively limited opportunities to make an impact, with the Blues forward pack suffocating their opponents.

'DCE' has notably become the first Maroons captain to be axed mid-series since Trevor Gillmeister in 1996.

Slater will speak on his selection decisions in a press conference on Monday morning.
