The New Zealand Warriors have confirmed the re-signing of veteran playmaker Te Maire Martin until the end of the 2026 season.

The 29-year-old was set to come off-contract at the end of this season, but the one-year extension will see him return to the Auckland-based club.

Martin's NRL career began with Penrith back in 2016, he then had stints with the Cowboys and Broncos before ending up in his native New Zealand to play for the Warriors.

His career was in jeopardy when a life-threatening brain bleed forced his retirement in 2020.

However, in 2022 he returned to rugby league in what was a remarkable comeback story.

Warriors general manager of recruitment, pathways and development Andrew McFadden praised Martin for his leadership and impact on the squad in a statement released on Wednesday.

"We’re really pleased to be able to keep Te Maire with us for 2026," he said.

"He’s tremendous value for us on the field while also providing great assistance for our younger halves coming through our pathways."

Known for his ability to take on the defensive line, Martin will provide cover for the regular starting halves duo of Luke Metcalf and Chanel Harris-Tevita.

Head coach Andrew Webster has needed all 105 games of Martin's NRL experience at certain stages throughout the season.

"Te Maire has given us so many options this season with his ability to fill so many positions," he said.

"At one time or another he has been used in most positions when we’ve lost players through injury.

"Above all he brings a fantastic club-first attitude and truly epitomises our next man up mentality."
