Could ‘voice of rugby league’ return to the microphone?

Could ‘voice of rugby league’ return to the microphone? image

Arguably rugby league’s greatest ever caller, Ray ‘Rabbits’ Warren, has revealed he’s not particularly enjoying retirement and has even considered a return to the microphone.

Now 82, Warren stepped away back in 2021 and has so far resisted all requests to come out of retirement, even just for marquee matches such State of Origin and Grand Finals.

But could that be about to change?

Speaking on Mornings with Mark Levy on 2GB, Warren certainly left the door open—albeit only slightly.

“I am not handling it (retirement) all that well to be honest,” Warren said.

“Leaving what I was doing was like cutting off my arm, I was 78 when I gave it away, so I didn’t have much longer to go.”

“It is flattering (being asked to come out of retirement) and I guess I love it deep down, but I was 78 when I gave it away and I didn’t want to undo all the good I might have done,” Warren said.

“But now I sit down and think I might be able to do a call from home.”

During the pandemic a majority of professional sporting events were called from studios—and even homes—far away from actual venues, and plenty still are today.

If ‘Rabs’ was given the chance to do the same, surely few rugby league fans would complain?
