In an untimely blow for Melbourne and Queensland, promising Storm utility Jack Howarth has been ruled out of Sunday’s NRL clash and next week’s State of Origin due to a shock medical emergency, appendicitis.
Melbourne Storm General Manager of Football Frank Ponissi confirmed on Wednesday that Howarth underwent surgery on Tuesday night to have his appendix removed, abruptly ending his Origin hopes for now.
“Jack came down with appendicitis yesterday and had surgery to remove his appendix last night,” Ponissi said.
“Unfortunately, it rules Jack out for the next few weeks, including this Sunday’s game against the Sharks and State of Origin with Queensland.”

Setback halts breakthrough season
Howarth had been building towards a potential Maroons debut, with his strong form earning attention as Queensland grapple with injury concerns. His versatility and toughness made him an attractive option, but the sudden diagnosis puts those plans on ice.
The 21-year-old had been pencilled in for a role in Sunday’s showdown with the Sharks at AAMI Park. Instead, he faces several weeks on the sidelines in recovery, adding to Melbourne’s growing list of unavailable backs.
While it’s not a long-term issue, the timing couldn’t be worse. Howarth’s Origin dream will have to wait, but if his form before this setback is anything to go by, it may not be long before another chance comes knocking.
