Ryan Matterson has been released from his playing contract by Parramatta for the remainder of the season.

The decision has allowed the backrower to make a surprise switch to Warrington Wolves.

"This is an opportunity for Ryan to explore new challenges and broaden his professional experience in the English Super League," the club’s General Manager of Football, Mark O’Neill, said.

Ryan Matterson granted immediate release from Parramatta as forward joins Warrington Wolves

Matterson has made just four appearances off the bench this campaign for the Eels as the former New South Wales representative has largely been overlooked by Jason Ryles, despite the team's obvious struggles.

Instead, the forward had been confined to the NSW Cup, where he played seven games for the Eels’ reserve-grade side.

His last appearance for Parra this year actually came in Round 13 of the NRL though, where he featured off the bench during an 18-10 loss to Penrith.

However, Matterson’s tenure at the club hasn’t officially come to an end yet, with the Eels revealing he remained contracted to them for the 2026 season.

"The club extends its best wishes to Ryan for his time with Warrington," Parra added in their statement.

Meanwhile, Matterson’s cameo will provide a considerable boost for the Sam Burgess-coached outfit ahead of the business end of the campaign.

The Wire have endured a tough trot in the Super League this season under the former English international’s watch.

Warrington are currently stuck in eighth place in the table, losing 10 of their 19 matches so far. They are three points outside the play-off places, with eight matches remaining in the regular season.
