State of Origin eligibility rules, explained
Origin eligibility has been a point of controversy for years.
A new ruleset was approved in 2012, which outlines six eligibility questions for players born in either Queensland or New South Wales.
It also applies to those who have resided in either state "since prior to their 13th birthday".
The questions are as follows:
- Which state were you born in?
- In which state did you play rugby league for the majority of years from U/6 - U/18?
- In which state of Australia did you spend the majority of years at school? (K-12)
- In which state did you first participate in a junior representative competition?
- For which state of Australia did you first play school state representative rugby league?
- Did your father play State of Origin and if so, for whom?
The majority of responses determine a player's eligibility.
If there is no clear majority, an application must be made to the NRL CEO, who will facilitate a review.
For players who have already featured in Origin at U18, U20 or senior level, their eligibility is confirmed.
