Police question Rabbitohs star at Gold Coast airport amid drug investigation image

Rabbitohs hooker Brandon Smith was questioned by Queensland Police on arrival at Coolangatta airport prior to his side's Round 23 win over the Titans.

The Sydney Morning Herald is now reporting that Smith was questioned regarding an individual known to him, who Queensland Police are keeping tabs on as part of an investigation into the supply of drugs.

As a teenager, the New Zealand international faced two counts of supplying and possessing dangerous drugs, to which he pleaded guilty in front of the District Court.

Upon disembarking from a Sydney flight, Smith was approached by officers and taken aside for questioning. Police later confirmed he was released without a charge.

"Queensland Police had cause to speak to a 29-year-old male at Coolangatta Airport. The male was later released without charge," read a statement from Queensland Police.

There is no suggestion of misconduct by Smith, who joined South Sydney mid-season from the Roosters.

His Rabbitohs career has not gone to plan so far - in his debut for the club, a damaged medial ligament sidelined him for more than a month.

The game against the Titans was his first since that injury, where he played 58-minutes off the pine.

Under the guidance of Wayne Bennett, Smith will now look to get himself back on track, where he is positioned to do so having recently signed a deal that will keep him in Redfern through 2027.
