South Sydney hooker Brandon Smith's milestone weekend began with an off-field twist after being questioned by Queensland Police on arrival at Coolangatta airport.

Smith, 29, was travelling with his Rabbitohs teammates on Saturday ahead of Sunday's clash against the Titans - his 150th first grade appearance.

Upon disembarking from the Sydney flight, Smith was approached by officers and taken aside for questioning. Police later confirmed he was released without a charge.

"Queensland Police had cause to speak to a 29-year-old male at Coolangatta Airport. The male was later released without charge," read a statement from Queensland Police.

The reason for the interaction remains unknown, and there is no suggestion of misconduct by the New Zealand international, who joined South Sydney mid-season from the Roosters.

The incident has drawn the attention of the NRL Integrity Unit, who have reportedly contacted the Rabbitohs seeking further details.

Club CEO Blake Solly declined to elaborate but confirmed Smith remained with the squad on Saturday evening.

The airport incident comes as Smith returns from a knee injury that sidelined him for more than a month.

His last appearance - in his Rabbitohs debut against Manly - was cut short after damaging his medial ligament.

The Round 23 match holds extra importance beyond Smith's milestone, with both sides battling to avoid the wooden spoon.

Souths are currently sitting last just hours before kick-off, though a win could lift them above the Titans.

Despite the police interview, Smith is expected to come off the bench as was originally named at the start of the week.
