Kobe Hetherington's recent one-year deal with the Broncos has paved the way for a potential move to the Perth Bears in 2027.

His manager confirmed the short-term contract was strategic, allowing Hetherington to explore his options once the Bears enter the competition.

The 26-year-old is a key player in Brisbane's forward rotation, having played 98 first grade matches for the club since his debut in 2021.

A strong defender with ball-playing upside, Hetherington started the season as Brisbane's lock but recently moved back to the bench behind Origin star Pat Carrigan.

Mal Meninga's close ties with Kobe's father, Queensland legend Jason Hetherington, has further fuelled speculation of a potential signing.

The Bears are reportedly targeting Hetherington as part of their recruitment strategy ahead of their inaugural season.

He's a strong leader, which was exemplified when he captained the Norths Devils Colts side to a grand final win in 2018.

All the way through the Queensland development system and into the early stages of his first grade career, Hetherington's shown immense talent as well as a toughness that can't be coached.

As the Bears prepare to build their team, securing a player with Hetherington's high-level experience would be a great start.

The Bears have also reportedly looked at bringing in fellow Queenslander Tino Fa'asuamaleaui on a monster contract.

As a result of having contrasting play-styles, Hetherington and Fa'asuamaleaui would be a nice one-two punch to give the Bears a formidable presence through the middle in their debut season.
