Laurie Daley labels Tigers star a 'total pro' after Origin non-selection image

Jarome Luai might’ve been axed from the New South Wales Origin side, but coach Laurie Daley has nothing but admiration for how the Tigers playmaker took the news.

Despite starring in last year’s memorable series win, Luai was overlooked for Game I this time around, with Daley opting to pair Mitch Moses and Nathan Cleary, two natural halfbacks, in the halves.

Luai was told of the decision moments after the Tigers’ 22-12 defeat to South Sydney.

“A total pro”: Daley explains tough call

Daley said the phone call to Luai wasn’t easy but praised the 27-year-old’s maturity and attitude.

“It was a difficult one. I had to speak to Jarome after the game,” Daley told The Big Sports Breakfast. “I was able to get through to him and told him it was a gut feel with Mitch. I like the way he’s playing, and his kicking game will be so important.

“I just feel that if Queensland try and put pressure on Nathan Cleary and his kicking game, we have an outstanding option in Mitch.

“Again, it was a tough call, but Jarome handled it like a professional. He said he totally understands, but he’ll be ready to go when called upon, and I thought, wow, what a professional. A total pro.”

Luai: “I am in control of the selection”

Luai fronted up for media duties almost immediately after receiving Daley’s call, admitting the decision stung, but said he’s determined to reclaim his spot.

“I am disappointed because I know what I am missing out on,” he told AAP.

“But I know I can be better. It is just about owning that now and moving forward. At the end of the day, just be a man about it all.”
