Laurie Daley has been stung after hoping it was second time lucky as he took the reins of New South Wales again.
The 55-year-old previously coached the Blues for five years, although he came up against an imposing Queensland side in the midst of their dynasty.
As a result, Daley managed to win just one series out of the five he was at the helm for before he departed in 2017.
However, following Michael Maguire’s exit after one triumphant year, Daley was brought back into the fold but had that losing taste in his mouth once again in 2025.
The Sporting News takes a look at Daley’s State of Origin coaching record with NSW.
What is Laurie Daley’s Origin coaching record with the NSW Blues?
Daley has won seven of the 18 matches he has coached, with Daley getting the better of Billy Slater in the 2025 opener before the Maroons responded with a gritty win to level the series in Perth and then sealing the series in Sydney.
His first game in charge of the Blues arrived in 2013 when the state got off to an impressive start under his watch against Mal Meninga’s men.
NSW battled to a 14-6 victory over QLD in front of over 80,000 fans at ANZ Stadium. But Daley’s joy was short-lived as the Maroons romped to a series-levelling win on home soil before they edged the Blues 12-10 in Sydney to lift the shield.
NSW got off to another positive start in the 2014 series as the state claimed a 12-8 win at Suncorp. And they then got their crowning moment in Game II thanks to Trent Hodkinson’s lone try securing a 6-4 victory that finally halted QLD’s unbeaten streak.
The Maroons avoided a whitewash in their own backyard during the dead-rubber though as they eased to a 32-8 result.
Daley’s side couldn’t retain the shield the following year as they traded barbs with their rivals before being blown away 52-6 in the decider.
More misery ensued in 2016 with NSW slipping to a 6-4 loss in the series opener. The Maroons then claimed a 26-16 win to wrap up the defence of their shield with a match to spare.
Daley’s side did avoid the clean sweep though at ANZ when they won 18-14 to provide some hope for the coach and the Blues.
This continued in 2017 with NSW toppling QLD in their own backyard 28-4. Yet the Maroons provided more heartbreak for Daley and the Blues in the next two matches with a hard-fought win to level the series before they cruised to a 22-6 result.
This proved to be Daley’s final game in charge during his first tenure.
