The Newcastle Knights’ season has taken another blow, with second-rower Dylan Lucas expected to be ruled out for the remainder of the year after suffering a serious foot injury.
During the Knights’ 32–14 loss to the Melbourne Storm on Saturday, the 25-year-old suffered a Lisfranc injury, forcing him to leave the field midway through the second half at McDonald Jones Stadium.
After leaving the field, Lucas was later seen on the bench watching his team, with his foot in a moon boot.
Newcastle coach Adam O’Brien confirmed that the young front-rower would undergo scans on Sunday but admitted the early signs were not encouraging.

“It doesn't look good," O’Brien said in his post-round conference.
The NRL Physio has stated that the typical recovery time for this type of injury is around three months and indicated that Lucas should be fit in time for the start of the 2026 pre-season.
Lucas has become the third Knights player ruled out for the remainder of the season due to surgery, joining star fullback Kalyn Ponga, who is sidelined with a foot injury, and young half Fletcher Sharpe, who is recovering from kidney and spleen injuries.
With the versatile player—who has been a reliable presence in both the back row and centres—set to miss the remainder of the 2025 season, O’Brien is expected to promote either Jermaine McEwen or Brodie Jones to the starting lineup.
In Lucas’ absence, Jermaine McEwen or Brodie Jones are tipped to step into the starting side, while Thomas Cant — who served as 18th man against the Storm — is likely to be elevated to the bench for the rest of the campaign.
