Cronulla's outside back depth is set to be pushed to the limit following news that Mawene Hiroti has joined KL Iro on the sidelines for an extended period.

Hiroti strained his calf in the first half of the Sharks' win over St George Illawarra, with the injury set to keep him out for at least a month.

It's a tough pill to swallow for the 26-year-old, who had fought his way into the team and was playing some good footy.

It's likely Siosifa Talakai will replace him at centre for this Sunday's trip to Brisbane to face the Broncos.

The Sharks also provided an update on the health of Iro, who underwent successful surgery on a pectoral injury.

Cronulla is hopeful the star centre will be able to play some part in the final rounds of the regular season, with three months the typical recovery time from his injury.
