Next Kangaroos coach: Wayne Bennett mooted for national team return image

Wayne Bennett could be set for a stunning return as Kangaroos coach, with the ARL Commission expected to make a call on the vacant role as early as this week.

Following Brad Fittler’s decision to withdraw from contention, Bennett has emerged as the leading candidate to take charge of the national side for the upcoming end-of-year Ashes series against England.

The only thing standing in his way? A current rule barring club coaches from holding the Kangaroos post, a policy the Commission may be prepared to overturn.

If cleared, Bennett would likely be appointed on a short-term basis, leaving the door open for a longer-term successor to lead Australia into the 2026 World Cup.

“It’s someone else’s problem”: Bennett on the speculation

Bennett, who hasn’t coached Australia in two decades, has made no secret of his interest in a return but remains typically coy in public.

“I’d like to stay out of the argument,” he told reporters on Saturday. “It’s someone else’s problem.”

Cameron Smith and Kevin Walters are also in the frame, but insiders suggest the job is Bennett’s if the Commission greenlights a rule change.

The scenario has sparked debate, especially given Mal Meninga was ruled out of continuing in the role after accepting the Perth Bears coaching job, despite his desire to stay on through 2025.

Should Bennett be appointed, Smith is tipped to join the coaching staff unless handed the reins himself. With the Ashes just three months away, the ARLC is under pressure to finalise the appointment quickly.
