'They’ll let him': Kalyn Ponga linked with switch image

Kalyn Ponga may be able to switch national allegiances – if he so chooses.

According to News Corp journalist Michael Carayannis, the Knights fullback is free to move from Australia to New Zealand in the international arena.

Ponga was born in Western Australia to Kiwi parents and is of Māori descent.

He has represented the Kangaroos at the Rugby League World Cup 9s but has never played in green and gold at Test match level.

The 27-year-old has also featured three times for the Māori All Stars.

Talks of a potential switch have arisen following AJ Brimson's defection to England.

It was previously believed that the Titans star's participation in the 2019 World Cup 9s event for Australia ruled him out of an allegiance change, although his request was recently approved.

This could set a precedent and allow Ponga to represent New Zealand.

"They’ll let him do it. Under the rules, (Ponga) can go and play for the Kiwis now," Carayannis said on NRL 360.

"The door’s been opened now for him to play for the Kiwis off the back of AJ Brimson being allowed a couple of weeks ago to switch from Australia to England.

"The big reason he wasn’t allowed to switch was because he played in that World Nines a couple of years ago, right. So did AJ Brimson.

"But AJ Brimson’s eligibility, he fronted the panel, and put a submission to the panel, and the panel ruled that the world nines doesn’t count because at that time it was supposed to be a circuit and a bigger sort of competition.

"So now, if he wants to, he can play for the Kiwis based on what’s happened with AJ Brimson."
