Josh Papalii’s playing future remains up in the air, with the Raiders prop caught between a possible extension in Canberra, fresh NRL interest, and ongoing negotiations with English Super League clubs.
Though previously resigned to finishing up at the end of 2025, likely in the UK, Papalii’s stance shifted during Origin camp, revealing he was open to staying in the NRL.
That openness has since been matched by his club, with Canberra now willing to reconsider their position.
Knights looming, Super League still circling
The Newcastle Knights are monitoring the situation closely. While no formal offer has been made, they’re reportedly interested if off-contract stars Tyson Frizell and Dane Gagai depart.

Papalii would bring much-needed experience to a squad that’s endured a grim 2025 campaign under pressure-laden coach Adam O’Brien.
Back in Canberra, the Raiders are looking to balance a roster already featuring Corey Horsburgh, Joseph Tapine, Morgan Smithies and Ata Mariota. Yet the club hasn’t ruled out finding a way to keep the 32-year-old.
Papalii’s agent Steve Gillis confirmed to The Canberra Times that talks with Raiders CEO Don Furner are on the horizon, but no firm decision has been made.
“I’m sure we’ll have a conversation [with Furner] at some stage, sooner rather than later,” Gillis said. “We’re still negotiating with England. No decision has been made; we’re still working through it all. It’s still too early to forecast how it’s going to unravel.”
For now, Papalii’s 2026 destination remains an open-ended story, but signs point to at least one more season from the veteran forward.
