Brisbane Broncos half Jock Madden has been nominated for the Ken Stephen Medal, with the club putting his name forward for the NRL’s most respected off-field honour.

Despite being ruled out for several months with a torn pectoral injury suffered during a Hostplus Cup match in Papua New Guinea, the 25-year-old has continued to go above and beyond in the community.

Madden’s dedication to supporting children and vulnerable groups across Queensland has earned him the nomination, with fans able to vote until 5 pm on Thursday, July 3.

Under the radar, over the top effort

While Madden has been a mainstay in the Broncos’ organised charity work, including visits to The Pyjama Foundation and Guide Dogs Queensland, it’s his personal initiative that’s left the deepest mark.

Without media attention, he’s been quietly visiting patients at Queensland Children’s Hospital every fortnight.

“He [William] has been playing with the footy they gave him ever since he got back home,” said Kathryn, whose son met Madden during one of his visits. “As parents, we really appreciated their visit – it brightened William’s day.”

Madden’s influence has extended to his teammates too, with Ezra Mam, Jaiyden Hunt and young Cam Bukowski now joining him in community outreach efforts.

Broncos staff have praised his leadership and kindness, noting how his genuine attitude has lifted spirits both in the locker room and across the wider Brisbane community.

The Ken Stephen Medal winner, to be announced at the Dally M Awards, will receive $1,000 to donate to their junior club and a charity of their choice.
