The Dragons haven't had a great run of it in the injury department in 2025, particularly among the forwards.

Those absences have tested their squad depth and presented opportunities for some to get a taste of first grade.

One such beneficiary is Jacob Halangahu.

Here's what you need to know about the youngster:

Who is Jacob Halangahu?

A highly rated edge forward, Halangahu gets his chance in first grade in the round 23 local derby against Cronulla at Jubilee Stadium.

The 18-year-old was originally named in the extended squad but elevated to the 17 on gameday, taking the place of Michael Molo on the bench.

Halangahu has been a standout in the Dragons' NSW Cup team this year, having previously starred through the club's Harold Matthews and SG Ball outfits.

Earlier this year, Halangahu crossed for a try in the U19s State of Origin clash with Queensland.

A leader at junior rep level, the backrower was named captain of the Australian Schoolboys side last year.

Jacob Halangahu contract

In March this year, Halangahu signed a two-year contract extension with St George Illawarra, keeping him at the club until at least the end of 2027.

“Jacob is a really promising young player and we are excited to lock him down,” Dragons coach Shane Flanagan said.

“Obviously, all the accolades that he has collected as a junior are great but what’s been most impressive is his application to training and his professionalism.

“He works hard and he’s had no issues mixing it with seasoned NRL players.

“He’s strong and he’s athletic and plays with lots of aggression and x-factor, so we’re excited he’ll be here.”

It's a family affair for Halangahu at the Dragons, whose younger brother is coming through the ranks, while his father is a coach with the junior sides.

“My goal is to be a one-club man, and this is the start of my journey now,” Halangahu said following his contract extension.

“These guys treat me like family and I’m very excited to continue to wear the Red V.”
