Former Blues five-eighth Luke Keary has taken to social media to propose his own system for player transfers in the NRL.

The 33-year-old, who is now playing for Catalans in the Super League, shared a LinkedIn post on Thursday outlining an alternative approach based largely on the NFL's use of free agency and trade windows.

"There’s no defined trade period, leading to sudden and often quiet player movement," he wrote.

"There’s no defined free agency period, meaning year-round negotiations."

While acknowledging the benefits of the current system, which gives players time to make informed decisions about their career, he warns that it comes at the cost of clarity for fans.

His proposed system, if implemented, would limit player movement to designated periods that could be tailored around the structure of the 27-round season.

Keary listed the potential benefits of a NFL-based transfer window.

"Reduced year-round speculation, with set periods for player movement," he wrote.

"Strategic roster management with clear deadlines.

"Fewer disruptions for teams, players and fans during the season.

"Increased media coverage and build up to trade deadlines and free agency periods."

The former Rabbitoh's and Rooster's playmaker didn't advocate for a one-size-fits-all approach in his adapted model.

"There are certain aspects which make our game unique and they need to be considered when implementing change," he wrote.

The current system has been under the microscope to start the 2025 season.

Marquee players like Daly Cherry-Evans and Lachlan Galvin have had their contract negotiations dominate the headlines, which could be impetus for a significant overhaul of NRL transfers as it currently stands.
