Brad Fittler has weighed in on the ongoing State of Origin eligibility debate.
The former Blues coach backed the current system, emphasising that Origin hasn't changed since its inception.
"New South Wales and Queensland rules don’t have to be adjusted at all," said Fittler on a recent episode of The Sunday Footy Show.
"If you’re here before 13, regardless of who you play for… you should be able to play State of Origin."
Fittler used the specific example of former Storm and Bulldogs outside back, Reimis Smith, to drive home his point.
"I’ve always used Reimis Smith as the example," he explained.
"He grew up in Botany, played all his juniors [in New South Wales].
"I coached him as a 16-year-old in New South Wales, and I always thought that Reimis should be able to play for New South Wales."
Fittler's comments come amid growing questions about player eligibility across both State of Origin and international competitions.
Stars like Jarome Luai and Brian To'o have become Origin regulars while pledging allegiance to Samoa internationally.
Meanwhile, players with Kiwi or English heritage must choose one or the other, forcing many to bypass their roots.

Shifting his focus to international rugby league, Fittler spoke passionately about the upcoming Kangaroos tour at the end of this season.
"We should take the best possible team we can take," he said.
"Every single player that is in Australia, who considers himself part Australian, should make himself available for that team."
