Former NRL star Josh Reynolds has urged the struggling Gold Coast Titans to make a bold move and chase Queensland great Cameron Smith as their next head coach.

Reynolds' call comes amid mounting speculation that current coach Des Hasler could be moved on as early as this week, if rumours are to be believed — or, at the very least, by season’s end — as the club considers a shift in direction.

The Titans are enduring a dismal 2025 campaign, sitting at the bottom of the NRL ladder after 18 rounds with just four wins.

Hasler, brought in last year to revive the struggling club, has so far been unable to spark a turnaround. After finishing 14th in 2024, the Titans now face the very real prospect of claiming the wooden spoon this season.

Speaking on SEN Radio on Friday, Reynolds said the Titans need to make a strong statement about the club’s future — and that starts with going after a proven winner like Smith.

"I think they need to go after a big fish, his name has been tossed around for a few jobs at the moment, someone like Cam Smith," Reynolds said.

"Lives up there. They need a winner. I know Cam Smith hasn't done any coaching, but they need someone who knows how to win. That's all he has done his whole career. It could be a big call."

Widely considered one of the greatest players in rugby league history, Smith has yet to step into a head coaching role since his retirement. However, he gained valuable experience as an assistant coach with the Maroons during the 2022 and 2023 Origin campaigns.

While Reynolds has backed Smith to take over the coaching reins at the Gold Coast Titans, the former Storm hooker has also hinted at his interest in leading the Australian national team in the upcoming Ashes series later this year.
