A promising young forward from the Dolphins’ Top 30 roster has made a surprise move to cross-town rivals, the Brisbane Broncos, in pursuit of greater opportunities in the NRL.

Starting with the Redcliffe Dolphins on a train-and-trial contract before progressing to the development list, Michael Waqa ultimately secured a place in the club’s Top 30 ahead of the 2025 season.

The emerging talent has been a standout in the Dolphins’ junior system, progressing through the Under-18s Academy side in the Mal Meninga Cup and representing Queensland at both the Under-17 and Under-19 levels.

Waqa’s rapid ascent through the club’s ranks saw him take the field in the NRL Pre-Season Challenge earlier this year against the North Queensland Cowboys, contributing to a dominant 50-8 victory and even crossing the try line himself.

But despite his strong standing within the Redcliffe-based club, the 20 year old has opted for a fresh start at rival Queensland club the Brisbane Broncos. .

Since joining Brisbane, Waqa has wasted no time making an impact, having already played four games for the club’s NRLQ side and crossing for a try in the Broncos’ recent clash against the Gold Coast Titans.

Dolphins CEO Terry Reader previously praised Waqa’s rapid rise through the club’s ranks in a statement he made in 2023.

"Michael did very well in his first pre-season training with NRL players," Reader said.

"We have always said one of our visions is to see young local players come through the grades and play NRL with the Dolphins.

"Michael has the opportunity to come right through from the juniors to the NRL, and we are excited about what the future holds for him.”
