Broncos vs Cowboys: Jake Turpin scores last minute winner in one of the ugliest games of the NRL season image

It was arguably one of the worst games of the NRL season, but a last-minute try to Jake Turpin has secured the Brisbane Broncos an 18-14 win over the North Queensland Cowboys.

In an 80 minutes that boasted a horror 27 errors between the two sides, it was the young playmaker who put the Broncos back into the top eight with a gutsy try with less than a minute remaining.

The Cowboys got out to a 14-12 lead in the 72nd minute after a Jake Clifford penalty goal, but their season was officially ended by their local rivals in a dour display.

Payne Haas was again the star of the show for Brisbane, running for 245 metres and making 30 tackles without a miss.

But it was the late brilliance from the recently re-signed 22-year old that will be the big talking point.

It was a frustrating game for players, coaches and spectators alike - and Twitter was at its best when describing the contest.

The Broncos will stay in the top eight if results go their way - but with the Wests Tigers up against the 15th-placed Bulldogs on Saturday night, the likelihood is they will be back in 9th spot by Sunday.
