Dolphins head coach Wayne Bennett has confirmed that Brandon Smith is expected to return in the coming weeks, easing fears over the hooker’s injury timeline.

Smith has been sidelined with a concern that initially raised alarm bells, but Bennett on Thursday moved to clarify the situation, reassuring fans that the issue isn’t as bad as first feared.

“It wasn’t as serious as they thought”: Bennett gives timeframe

“Yeah, we will [see Brandon Smith again this year],” Bennett told media. “It should be another two or three weeks. It wasn’t as serious as they thought it was.

“So, yeah, he should be back.”

The veteran coach was also quick to put things in perspective, with several players missing and the Dolphins’ finals hopes under pressure.

“You’ve got to have a long-term view to it [injuries at the club]. It’s as simple as that,” he said. “I’m not too worried about the finals at the minute.

“I’m just worried about the way we play and getting us through this tough period.”

Smith’s return will offer a timely boost to a squad battling both on the ladder and with fitness, as Bennett looks to steady the ship through the backend of the season.
