'Get out of your room': Brad Fittler's blunt advice to Nicho Hynes image

Brad Fittler has shared some straightforward advice for Nicho Hynes and other aspiring State of Origin players about building connections during team camp.

The often-criticised Sharks halfback appeared on Nine's 100% Footy earlier this week, opening up about the challenges he faced in rugby league’s most intense environment.

Hynes featured in one game during both the 2023 and 2024 Origin series before being dropped and seemingly sliding down the list of options for a halves or bench role.

His comments about his time in Blues camp caught Fittler, who handed Hynes his debut in 2023, off guard during this week’s episode of Freddy and The Eighth.

While the former NSW coach couldn’t recall the exact details of Hynes’ first Origin experience, he emphasised the significance of making an effort to connect with teammates.

"The one bit of advice I'd give to any player is just get out of your room," Fittler said.

"Be with the team, don't be in your room - if you're in your room, you're on your own.

"I can't go back, I'd have no idea how Nicho was in those camps or if he got on with people or if he had some friends going in there, which sometimes helps.

"You've just got to force yourself to be with other people and learn about them."

Fittler noted Hynes' unfortunate appearances, including the game where Joseph Suaalii was sent off early, leading to a tough loss, and his 2023 debut off the bench in the final minutes. Still, he acknowledged the emotional toll of those moments.

"You can be pretty hard on yourself and if you get to play a rep game and you lose, it's a bad experience because it's intense and you want to win so bad.

"Just keep playing well and you will get another chance."

Andrew Johns agreed, noting that it can be "intimidating" for new playmakers to immediately take charge and direct more experienced teammates in the Origin arena.

Former Blues hooker Api Koroisau also acknowledged the challenge of forming bonds within the short 10-day camp window.
