Billy Burns has signed a new deal with Cronulla that will keep him at the club until the end of the 2026 season, capping off a year where he’s quietly become one of the Sharks’ most effective contributors.

The 26-year-old has made ten NRL appearances so far this year, scoring twice and carving out a genuine impact in Craig Fitzgibbon’s squad.

His rise has been steady and hard-earned, having led Newtown Jets to NSW Cup glory in 2024 before earning a promotion into the Sharks' top-grade rotation.

‘Stoked to stick around’

Burns, who joined Cronulla from the Dragons last year, spoke with honest gratitude about the club’s belief in him. “I'm thrilled – the club believed in me a couple of years ago and I definitely believe in the club and where we're going,” he said.

"I'm stoked to stick around, be with this group another year and get after it again.”

He was quick to credit the coaching set-up and the camaraderie among the playing group.

“The level of coaching is great. I've got plenty of trust in Fitzy (Craig Fitzgibbon) and what we learn off him and the coaches,” he added. “The group we have here is awesome – we're tight-knit and there's plenty of enjoyment playing with these guys."

Sharks General Manager of Football Darren Mooney echoed the sentiment, calling Burns “a positive character” who had made the most of every chance.

“Billy has worked hard to make the most of every opportunity that's come his way this year, not only holding his own in the NRL but having a genuine impact,” said Mooney.

Having found a rhythm in Cronulla colours, Burns isn’t hiding his ambitions. “I want to keep playing as much NRL as I can – that’s always a goal – and help the team succeed as much as I can, on and off the field,” he said.
