Melbourne Storm have suffered another blow to their spine heading into Round 19, with star fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen officially ruled out of Saturday's clash against the Newcastle Knights due to ongoing calf tightness.

Papenhuyzen was initially named to return this weekend after missing last week’s showdown with the Cowboys, but the Storm’s medical team has opted to keep their electric No.1 on the sidelines as a precaution.

The club appears determined not to rush his return given his history of injury setbacks, particularly over the last few seasons—despite already being short on troops.

This latest absence comes at a critical time, with the Storm aiming to consolidate their position in the top four and sitting just two points behind the league-leading Canberra Raiders as they push for another minor premiership.

Papenhuyzen, who has shown flashes of his explosive best in 2025, had yet to miss a game all season, playing through the opening 14 matches.

In his place, Nick Meaney is set to retain the fullback role after an outstanding showing in Round 18 against the Cowboys.

Meaney was one of the Storm’s best in that contest, scoring a double and kicking five goals in a dynamic display that reminded fans of his talent and versatility.

With Cameron Munster also unavailable due to personal leave following the recent passing of his father, the Storm spine will again look different from what was expected earlier in the year.

The absence of both Papenhuyzen and Munster will heap pressure on halfback Jahrome Hughes to shoulder the load, though fortunately it has been confirmed that Origin star Harry Grant will back up from representative duties to support him.

Saturday evening’s clash at McDonald Jones Stadium looms as another key test of depth for the Storm, and an opportunity for fringe players to step up in the absence of key stars.

There is no official word yet on whether Papenhuyzen will be available for Round 20, but the Storm are unlikely to take any chances with their marquee fullback until he is 100% ready to return.
