Cole Palmer won the Premier League Young Player of the Season prize for 2023/24.

The Chelsea and England star was confirmed as the award winner on May 17, two days before the final matchday of the Premier League season, after a campaign in which he has been directly involved in 32 goals for the Blues.

The Premier League announced the nominees for its Young Player of the Season prize on Thursday, May 9. Eight players were on the shortlist for the award, which is given to the best player in the division who was 23 years old or younger when the season started on August 11, 2023.

Four of the nominees are also in the running for the Player of the Season award, including Manchester City's Erling Haaland, who won both of these prizes in 2022/23, and Palmer.

The Sporting News runs through this season's shortlist and takes a look back at the past winners of the award, which has been dominated by Pep Guardiola's City.

List of nominees for Premier League Young Player of the Season 2023/24

Eight players were named on the shortlist for the Player of the Season award for 2023/24. Cole Palmer was confirmed as the winner on May 17.

Phil Foden (Manchester City)

The FWA Footballer of the Year, Foden was nominated for Player of the Season and the young player prize after playing a starring role in Man City's title bid.

Erling Haaland (Manchester City)

Although not quite at the levels of last season, when he smashed the record for goals in a single Premier League season, Haaland still leads the Golden Boot standings and, like Foden, was nominated for both Premier League awards this term.

Alexander Isak (Newcastle United)

Isak became the first Magpies player in 21 years to score 20 goals in a single Premier League season, earning him a nomination for Player of the Season and Young Player of the Season — an award for which he just about qualifies.

Kobbie Mainoo (Manchester United)

In a wretched season collectively for Manchester United, Mainoo has been a shining light of positivity. The 19-year-old's performances in midfield earned him a first England call-up in March, which was quite the achievement given he missed most of the first three months of 2023/24 due to injury.

Cole Palmer (Chelsea)

Palmer, signed for £40 million ($52.4m) last summer from Manchester City, has been sensational in what is still a flawed Chelsea team. He's just the third player aged 21 or younger to record 30+ goal involvements in a single Premier League season, after Robbie Fowler and Chris Sutton. That was enough to earn him this award for 2023/24.

Bukayo Saka (Arsenal)

Arguably the true leader of Arsenal, despite being just 22 years old, Saka has the most goals and assists for the Gunners this season.

William Saliba (Arsenal)

Arsenal's title challenge faded last season when Saliba suffered an injury. He hasn't missed a minute of league football in 2023/24, and the Gunners have benefited massively, keeping five more clean sheets than any other side.

Destiny Udogie (Tottenham)

Although injury brought his season to a premature end, Udogie has been a vibrant addition to Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham revolution. It seems little coincidence that much of Spurs' poor form over the final weeks of the season has come since the Italy international was sidelined.

Past winners of Premier League Young Player of the Season award

The modern Young Player of the Season prize has only been running since 2019/20, unlike the senior award, whose history runs back to the mid-1990s.
