The Washington Redskins will exercise the fifth-year option on quarterback Robert Griffin III's rookie contract.

The Redskins announced the news on Monday, with general manager Scot McCloughan offering a simple explanation.

"He's a good football player," he said, when asked why the team picked up the option.

Griffin sustained a dislocated ankle in week two of last season, but returned to start five of the Redskins' final games of the campaign.

The 25-year-old, who was selected by the Redskins as the second overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, is now under contract through the 2016 season.
