One of Australia's NFL cult heroes has been released from his team, with the San Francisco 49ers letting go of punter Mitch Wishnowsky.
Wishnowsky, 33, had held the position for the team since they drafted him in 2019 with the 110th pick.
But following a disappointing season that saw them miss the playoffs, San Francisco have opted to move in a different direction, replacing him with veteran Thomas Morstead.

Wishnowsky played in two Super Bowls during his time in the Bay Area, losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in both 2020 and 2024, and in 2021 he made a field goal to become the first Australian to score a point in an NFL game.
However, the 2016 Ray Guy Award winner was sidelined with a back injury in November that saw him miss the final eight games of the season.
This, as well as Wishnowsky's somewhat limited leg strength, led the 49ers to replace him with 49-year-old Thomas Morstead, a former Pro Bowl selection who will join his fifth team in the past five years, after playing for the New Orleans Saints from 2009 to 2020.
His departure comes following the hiring of new 49ers Special Teams Coordinator Brant Boyer, who has replaced much of the former unit.
