How long was the Super Bowl national anthem in 2022? Mickey Guyton hits betting over image

There was one big pregame question that bettors were looking to answer before Super Bowl 56 began. Would anthem singer Mickey Guyton go over or under the expected time in her performance?

Six of the previous seven Super Bowls saw the over prop hit for the national anthem. That said, Guyton had been noted for her speedy rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner" over the years, including a recent performance that lasted just 76 seconds.

That left bettors torn on which outcome to expect. And though bettors without any knowledge of Guyton's performance style would almost immediately bet the over heavily, it was a true 50-50 proposition entering the game.

In the end, the over ended up pretty safely hitting.

Below is a breakdown of Guyton's anthem performance and how it has compared to other performances over the history of the Super Bowl.

How long was the Super Bowl national anthem in 2022?

The 2022 Super Bowl national anthem lasted unofficially one minute and 51 seconds, from the start of the first word song to the end of the final held note.

Mickey Guyton was this year's anthem performer. Guyton, 38, is a country music artist best known for her songs "Better Than You Left Me" and "Black Like Me." The latter song speaks to her experiences as a Black woman in country music and was released after George Floyd's murder and the Black Lives Matter protests that came in its wake.

What was the Super Bowl national anthem over/under?

  • Over 95 seconds: -120
  • Under 95 seconds: -120

Essentially, these betting odds mean that the anthem was a toss-up to be either over or under 1:35 long. That normally would have screamed to the betting crowd to take the over, given that the last nine anthem performances have all been at least 1:52 in length.

However, as SN's Matt Lutovsky analyzed, Guyton is known for her rather brief anthem performances. And when Guyton performed the anthem this year for the National Memorial Day Concert, she clocked in at just 76 seconds.
