The NFL did its best to improve its "Thursday Night Football" offerings in 2023. The returns were solid, but there were still plenty of disappointing matchups on the slate.
Some of this couldn't be helped. After all, how was the NFL to know Aaron Rodgers would get hurt four snaps into the season and the Jets would be starting Tim Boyle by Week 12? That made for a non-competitive inaugural Black Friday game.
The NFL deserves a bit more blame for having the Bears scheduled to play Thursday night twice. Each of their matchups with the Commanders and Panthers were low-interest contests that were, at times, difficult to watch.
Still, the NFL at least tried to give Al Michaels and Kirk Herbstreit a package about which to be excited. None of the 2023 games were close to as unwatchable as the Nathaniel Hackett-led Broncos facing the Colts in 2022, a game that prompted Michaels to famously say:
"Sometimes, a game can be, at least to this point, so bad, it's almost good. You know what I'm saying?"
The NFL is doing its best to avoid having a game like that in prime time again, but if it strengthens the slate again and can't get anything more than solid games, the NFL may have to consider playing on a short week to be the problem instead of the chosen matchups.

NFL on Amazon Prime schedule 2024
The NFL on Amazon will once again feature a Black Friday game in 2024 after broadcasting one in 2023. The rest of the streaming services "Thursday Night Football" games will fittingly be played on Thursdays, though NBC's "Sunday Night Football" will broadcast a couple of its games on Thursday during the season (Weeks 1 and 13), as usual.
