Report: Playoff berth made Clifford's contract with Hornets fully guaranteed image

Steve Clifford has more security than you might expect for a coach of a 5-15 team.

According to ESPN's Marc Stein, Clifford's contract with the Hornets is now fully guaranteed thanks to Charlotte making the playoffs last season.

Clifford signed a three-year, $6 million deal with the then-Bobcats in 2013. He led the team to a 43-39 record and the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference last season. Stein reported the postseason berth triggered a previously undisclosed clause in Clifford's contract that made his final year guaranteed.

The Hornets were expected to be a factor in the East this year after bringing in Lance Stephenson, Marvin Williams and Brian Roberts. They ended a 10-game losing streak Friday with a buzzer-beating victory over the Knicks.
