Will the Mavericks trade the No.1 pick in the NBA Draft?: Team owner reveals off-season plans image

The Dallas Mavericks shocked the world this week, pulling off the near-impossible to win the NBA Draft Lottery.

With this win comes the opportunity to draft Cooper Flagg, widely regarded as a future basketball superstar.

But given their track record, many are wondering what the Mavericks actually plan to do with their newly-found asset.

Will the Mavericks trade the No.1 pick in the NBA Draft?

The Dallas Mavericks are obviously no strangers to big trades; in early 2025 they upended their franchise by shipping off star Luka Dončić to Los Angeles in return for Anthony Davis.

However, it does not appear that they will look to make another blockbuster move, with Mavericks owner Patrick Dumont reportedly confirming that he will hold on to the top pick in the draft, and use it to take Duke star Flagg.

"Patrick Dumont, the governor of the Dallas Mavericks, recognises the gift horse that was delivered to this franchise, that frankly after the Luka Dončić trade had massive business concerns," reported ESPN's Tim McMahon.

"He recognises just how much Cooper Flagg would help mitigate those concerns.

"The Dallas Mavericks will be picking Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 overall pick."

This quiets speculation that Dallas could look to use the pick to trade for a current star such as Giannis Antetokounmpo, who some believe could be better suited to the Mavericks' 'win-now' ethos.
