A splash hit in Pittsburgh is a lot rarer than a splash hit in San Francisco. For one, the Allegheny River is way tougher to reach than McCovey Cove. For two, boats sit in the cove but don't guard it.

The Pirates' Pedro Alvarez solved the first problem, at least, with a 461-foot blast off the Twins' Ricky Nolasco on Tuesday night. The ball cleared everything, except a boat that was  on the water's edge.

Only two balls have gone into the water on the fly beyond PNC Park's walls, hit by Daryle Ward and Garrett Jones. Alvarez's would have, too, had it, you know, not landed in a boat.
