Max Verstappen started the British Grand Prix on pole position, but a third Silverstone win looked a tall order for the reigning world champion.
Verstappen, who won this race in 2023 and also triumphed in the 70th anniversary Grand Prix at the storied Northamptonshire track three years earlier, claimed Q1 by 0.103 seconds ahead of 2025 championship leader Oscar Piastri by 0.103.
Piastri's McLaren team-mate Lando Norris and Mercedes' George Russell were just 0.015 and 0.019 seconds further back respectively, while Lewis Hamilton made it three British drivers in the top five places on home soil.

Norris was roared on from the grandstands as he sought to make further inroads or perhaps overhaul Piastri's 15-point lead, following his victory in Austria last time out.
Verstappen lies a more distant third and was last on the top step of the podium five races ago at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, after which McLaren's dominance of the season has continued.

Who won the F1 race today?
Lando Norris made it back-to-back wins, further closing the gap to world championship leader Oscar Piastri, by taking the chequered flag at a chaotic British Grand Prix.
Rain lashed down upon Silverstone on Sunday, throwing the best-laid race plans out of the window as a succession of drivers spun off the track.
Pole-sitter Max Verstappen complained that his Red Bull was undrivable during the closing stages. Despite understandable frustration, this was something of an emotional over-exaggeration, as several drivers found themselves flung across the gravel. Choosing optimum tyres for the track conditions proved a near-impossible riddle.

Piastri's advantage at the top of the standings is trimmed to eight points and Norris' McLaren colleague will rue the 10-second penalty he received for an infringement under safety car conditions on lap 22 — an incident that sent Verstappen spinning off.
"I'm not going to say much, I'll get myself in trouble," a disgruntled Piastri said after he finished 6.5 seconds in arrears, before turning the focus onto one of the day's standout stories.
On his 239th Grand Prix start, Nico Hulkenberg claimed his first podium finish in the Sauber, holding off a dogged challenge from Lewis Hamilton in fourth.
Verstappen wrestled his Red Bull to fifth, ahead of Pierre Gasly in the Alpine. Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso each scored points for Aston Marin in seventh and ninth either side of Williams' Alex Albon.
George Russell closed out the points in 10th, having experienced similar struggles to Verstappen. It meant that, despite the contrast of Norris' emotional delight and Piastri's simmering anger, it was a huge weekend for McLaren, who look set to turn the title battle into a two-horse race from within their own stable.
