Manchester City's squad defending their Champions League title and aiming for a record fourth consecutive Premier League title is considered one of the best teams assembled in European history.

Having returned to the top of the Premier League, this week's Champions League quarterfinal against Real Madrid and FA Cup semifinal against Chelsea puts an unprecedented "double-treble" within reach.

Pep Guardiola has put together a squad bursting with stars and key players, from expensive transfer captures to young and bright academy products.

Owned by Sheikh Mansour's Abu Dhabi United Group (ADUG) and Newton Investment and Development vehicles since 2008 and operated by the City Football Group since 2013, Manchester City are one of the world's richest and most financially powerful clubs.

Their vast network of contacts and club subsidiaries has made them one of the most dominant forces in the transfer market and the proof is in their first-team squad.

How much did Man City squad cost?

Manchester City, owned by UAE royalty, have massive financial might. However, while their squad boasts some expensive players acquired via sizable transfer fees, not everyone on the squad was brought over by backing up the Brinks truck.

A player's transfer value is not always a true reflection of their quality or worth. It can often be affected by many things, including age, club, nationality, remaining contract length, previous club leverage in the market, release clauses, and many other factors.

Man City's true financial might has come often in securing players with high wages that no other club can afford. For example, Erling Haaland's arrival from Borussia Dortmund may have cost £52 million, but that figure was significantly lower than his perceived worth on the market. That £52m was stipulated by a release clause in his Dortmund contract and not the result of negotiations. Many clubs were willing to pay that same amount, but he chose Man City for the wages they could offer him (among other reasons).

The most expensive player on the Man City roster was Jack Grealish, as City paid a massive £100 million to Aston Villa for his services in the summer of 2021.

The combined cost of Man City's first-team squad in 2023/24 is approximately £792.5m / $1.031bn.

What is Man City squad worth?

Cost and current value are two completely separate things.

Worth is a perceived, theoretical representation of the squad's current value on the market, while cost is an actual dollar amount of past transactions.

The most valuable player on the Man City roster currently, according to Transfermarkt, is unsurprisingly striker Erling Haaland. Combining his youth, position, world-class talent, production, and star power, he makes for the perfect player to command a huge dollar figure if he were theoretically sold to another club today.

Market value figures via Transfermarkt as of April 17, 2023.
