Man Utd suffers huge blow in pursuit of transfer target image

Manchester United’s search for a new goalkeeper has hit a snag, and it’s a big one. The club had its sights firmly set on Aston Villa's Emiliano Martinez.

But now, reports suggest there's no release clause in the Argentine’s contract, meaning United will have to pay full price — or walk away.

It was previously believed that Martinez could be signed for around £21.6 million due to a clause in his contract.

That figure had raised hopes among United fans that a move could be made swiftly, especially with Andre Onana struggling in his debut season at Old Trafford.

But according to the Daily Mail, that rumored clause doesn't exist.

So, unless Villa decide to play ball, United might be left catching crosses from the sidelines in this chase.

How much will Man Utd have to pay for Emiliano Martinez?

With no fixed release clause, Aston Villa now hold the cards.

The club isn't under pressure to sell and would likely demand a fee well north of £21 million — possibly closer to double that — if United come calling.

Martinez joined Villa in 2020 from Arsenal and has since made over 200 appearances, keeping 70 clean sheets.

He's also a World Cup winner with Argentina, and his stock has only risen in recent years. That means United may need to splash serious cash or explore other options.

Martinez is reportedly open to a new challenge, and while Saudi clubs have also shown interest, a move within the Premier League would appeal to the 32-year-old if terms are met.

But here's the kicker — United might not even sell Onana this summer. The Cameroonian is injured but set to return in August and wants to fight for his spot.

Meanwhile, backup keeper Altay Bayindir could also depart, adding more pressure on the club to sort its goalkeeping situation quickly.
