Man Utd confirms new appointment as Ruben Amorim loses key staff image

Manchester United have shuffled the deck again — this time with a familiar face taking center stage.

Darren Fletcher, a club legend and former first-team coach, has stepped into a new role as the head coach of United’s Under-18 team.

This move comes as United prepare for a crucial new chapter under Ruben Amorim, who will be in charge for his first full season at Old Trafford.

Fletcher’s shift means Amorim will now be without one of his key backroom figures. But for Fletcher, it’s a personal leap forward — one that could be the beginning of his journey toward full-time management.

The 41-year-old, who came through the United academy himself, made over 300 appearances for the club.

His playing days were marked by grit, leadership, and a midfield engine that never seemed to run out of fuel — even if his stomach sometimes did (Crohn’s disease fans know the story).

What Darren Fletcher said on becoming the new head coach?

The club confirmed the appointment, saying ( in official statement): "Manchester United are delighted to confirm the appointment of Darren Fletcher as lead coach of the Under-18s."

He has already taken charge of preseason training, starting with a camp at adidas HQ in Germany and a friendly against QPR.

Fletcher added, “I am really excited to take on this new role and increase my responsibility to directly develop our young players. I’m looking forward to working with such a talented age-group; supporting them to reach their potential and preparing them to enjoy careers at the highest level possible.”

While Amorim heads to the U.S. with the senior squad later this month, Fletcher will stay behind to shape the next crop of talent. And who knows? Maybe he’s quietly plotting a tactical comeback of 4-4-2 while he’s at it.

For now, it’s one Red Devil moving down the ranks — but with an eye firmly on the top.
