Joe Root climbed to the top of England’s all-time ODI run-scorers list, leapfrogging Eoin Morgan, as the hosts pulled off a nerve-jangling three-wicket win over the West Indies and wrapped up the series in Cardiff.

Set a daunting 309 to chase under the Welsh skies, England stumbled out of the gate, tumbling to 2 for 2 and later 93 for 4. Ben Duckett, Jamie Smith, and skipper Jos Buttler all bagged ducks, leaving the middle order with a mountain to climb. But Root stood tall while others fell, anchoring the innings with a masterclass — an unbeaten 166, his career-best — to become the first English batter to break the 7,000-run barrier in ODIs.

Alzarri Joseph gave England plenty to think about, grabbing four scalps and doing his best to keep the game on a knife’s edge. But in the end, Root had the final say, sealing the deal by thumping Jayden Seales to the long-on rope — a shot that not only brought up the win but also the series.

England vs. West Indies team news

There was never any real chance of England shaking things up just yet — their batting lineup is humming along nicely, and with the Gujarat Titans crashing out of the IPL, there’s no need to wrangle an early release for Jos Buttler to dash into the RCB showdown.

Jamie Overton’s unlucky break — quite literally, thanks to a finger injury — has cracked the door open for Matthew Potts to finally get a run. He’s been hanging around the squad all summer like a shadow, and now he might just get his time in the sun. While the selectors could’ve rolled the dice on Luke Wood and his left-arm angle for something a bit different, they seem more likely to play it straight this time around.

England predicted XI: Smith, Duckett, Root, Brook (c), Buttler (wk), Bethell, Jacks, Carse, Rashid, Potts, Mahmood.

Evin Lewis took a painful blow to the groin just before the series opener, but if he's shaken that off in time, he’s expected to reclaim his spot at the top of the order. That could spell the end of the road — at least temporarily — for Jewel Andrew, who, despite a short stay at the crease in Edgbaston, looked as assured as anyone.

In Lewis’s absence, Justin Greaves was bumped up to open, though with the lineup reshuffling again, he’s likely to slide back into the middle order. Meanwhile, Jayden Seales might keep his place in the XI thanks to his four-wicket haul — despite the runs he leaked — which may leave Shamar Joseph waiting in the wings once more.

West Indies predicted XI: King, Lewis, Carty, Hope (c & wk), Jangoo, Greaves, Chase, Forde, Joseph, Motie, Seales.
