Victorian fast bowler Scott Boland is favourite to replace the injured Josh Hazlewood for Australia's second Test against India in Adelaide.

Hazlewood was ruled out of the day-night Test at Adelaide Oval because of a minor side injury with his return date currently unknown.

While yet-to-debut fast bowlers Sean Abbott and Brendan Doggett have been called up to the squad as cover, a member of the initial squad is expected to get promoted from within.

Boland hasn't played for Australia since the third Ashes Test against England in Leeds in 2023 - a match he failed to take a wicket in.

Hazelwood's injury is not expected to be long-term with a Cricket Australia statement revealing he would be remaining with the squad.

“Hazlewood will remain with the group in Adelaide to prepare for the remainder of the series,” CA said in a statement.

The senior Aussie quick will endeavour to be fit for the third Test at the Gabba, Brisbane, commencing on December 14.

Australia are 1-0 down in the five-Test series against India after being thrashed by 295 runs in the first Test in Perth.
