The fourth Test between India and England ended with heroic efforts of the Indian batters, who batted for 5 sessions to pull off a draw from the jaws of defeat.

Washington Sundar was promoted to number 5, where he stitched a 34-run stand with captain Shubman Gill — more importantly, played 17.2 out before the latter was dismissed.

Ravindra Jadeja joined Sundar in the middle with over two sessions left in the day and India having 6 wickets in hand.

The visitors did not lose any further wickets on the day, and Ben Stokes eventually offered a draw when 15 overs of the day were left.

However, the approach from Stokes was declined by the Indian batters, and the England captain did not look happy and had a heated exchange with the batters.

See what India coach Gautam Gambhir had to say about the incident.

Gautam Gambhir slams Ben Stokes' reaction to India refusing an early draw:

When the optional final hour of the Test was left, and the teams had a chance to call it off, Sundar and Jadeja were batting at 80*(188) and 89*(173) respectively.

India refused to accept an early draw as the batters approached their well-deserved centuries.

The refusal from the visitors did not go well with Stokes, who questioned Jadeja if he would be happy hitting Harry Brook to get the hundreds.

However, India did not budge, and the southpaw duo ended with 101* and 107* respectively before accepting a draw.

This was notably also the maiden Test century for Sundar, and coach Gambhir made sure he had their back in the press conference after the end of the match.

"If someone is batting on 90 and the other is batting on 85, don't they deserve a hundred? Would they [England] have walked off — if someone from the England side were batting on 90 or 85?" asked the India head coach.

"If someone is getting the opportunity to get their first hundred, wouldn't you allow them to do it? They weathered the storm. It's up to them if they want to play that way. I have nothing more to say," he added.

The crucial centuries from Sundar and Jadeja on Day 5 ensured that India batted out the final two and a half sessions of the day.

Their combined effort to bat 65 overs alongside KL Rahul and Gill's 78 overs combined made sure India head to the Oval with an opportunity to tie the series 2-2.
