Du Plessis pleaded not guilty and is seeking legal advice ahead of a hearing date being announced.
Footage emerged of Du Plessis appearing to lick his fingers with a mint in his mouth and rub one side of the ball.
Earlier today South African players had come out in support of their skipper.
South Africa's Hashim Amla has blasted the timing of the Faf du Plessis ball-tampering investigation, saying it sounds like "sour sweets".

"I'm not sure what the big deal is," Amla said at MCG, flanked by teammates. "To a lot of people it is sounding more like sour sweets."

"I'm just trying to clear what we think is an absolutely wrongful allegation."
Level two breaches may be hit with a fine of up to 100 per cent of a player's match fee as well as up to two suspension points which would see Du Plessis miss one Test match.
